Academic Stockholm

For Stockholm to thrive.

Stockholm is one of the world’s leading knowledge regions, where universities are a natural and active part of the development. Academia contributes to the success of society through collaboration, exchange of ideas and learning. Stockholm is modern, open and safe, characterized by creative industries, diversity and a high level of innovation.

The Stockholm region ranks highly in comparisons of places based on creativity, innovation, economic stability, sustainability, social climate and educational level. All in all, there are values that are both distinctive and attractive in national and international competition.

Stockholm is home to 18 universities and university colleges, each with its own academic profile, history and links to the surrounding community. There is breadth and depth in educational programs and research. Engineers, visual artists, economists, dentists, social workers, musicians, theologians, nurses, architects, doctors, microbiologists, opera singers and so on – the list goes on.

Academia is important to Stockholm’s growth and plays a crucial role in the development and well-being of society. It is an industry that employs more than 21,000 people, has an annual turnover of SEK 23 billion and educates nearly 110,000 students at undergraduate, graduate and postgraduate levels.

The universities in Stockholm are also becoming more and more international, which is a prerequisite for being able to tackle the great challenges of our time through international research cooperation. Each year, more than 11,000 international students come to Stockholm to study for a shorter or longer period of time. Germany, China, India and France are among the leading countries for international students. The number of researchers with degrees from other countries has also increased by 60% over the past ten years.

Of Stockholm’s 18 universities and university colleges, nine are headed by women and nine by men. In order to broaden perspectives in research and education, it is important to have a gender-balanced academy.

Highlighting the importance of Stockholm’s 18 universities and university colleges is part of Stockholms Akademiska Forum’s mission.
