Universities in Stockholm are important in fighting the coronavirus crisis

In Stockholm, Sweden, the coronavirus puts the universities’ broad creativity in focus as the struggle to help society find ways out of the pandemic continues. In times of crisis, it becomes even clearer what the academy’s cross-border ideas and approach contribute. Not only with knowledge and new research, but also with the ability to innovate, fast adaptation and creativity.

We have previously written about the major change that Stockholm’s universities and university colleges did in mid-March, to switch into digital education in just a few hours. We also talked about a number of early initiatives, such as Stockholm University’s hand desinfection factory, Sophiahemmet University’s rapid training of laid-off airline staff, as well as Karolinska Institutet’s e-learning courses on how to handle and treat Covid-19 patients, which were commissioned by the National Board of Health and Welfare.

Fighting the coronavirus

Knowledge is crucial to the development and welfare of a society. The coronavirus in Stockholm is fought with academic creativity and knowledge.

Ersta Sköndal Bräcke University College has, on behalf of the National Board of Health and Welfare, developed an e-learning program for new staff in the elderly care and disability care to meet the challenges during the Corona pandemic.

The research group at KTH and the Science for Life Laboratory, which we mentioned earlier, are working intensively on the development of an antibody test. A first analysis from test kits sent to randomly selected Stockholmers has yielded promising results and now a second round of test kits has been sent out.

At KTH Water Centre, a project with water analysis from Stockholm’s wastewater treatment plants has started where it has been possible to detect the virus in the water. By following the virus level in the water, a second wave of the infection can be predicted. The research group has also quickly established international collaboration partners.

At Karolinska Institutet, research in a number of areas to fight the Corona virus SARS-CoV-2 are in progress. It ranges from research to finding vaccines, research on the treatment of Covid-19, research on antibodies and development of tests, to aspects of public health such as how loneliness and social distancing affects us.

At the Stockholm School of Economics, new research projects have also quickly started to study how the economy and consumption behavior are affected by the pandemic.

Several of the Swedish Defence University’s crisis management experts assist with their knowledge in the Swedish Government’s Office for Crisis Management during the pandemic.

Several of the higher education institutions have also compiled expert lists covering knowledge in a number of areas to understand and explain different aspects of the Corona-crisis.
