Multidisciplinary teams and cross-boundary solutions: An Exploration

Emerging human problems are complex, and therefore need complex, cross-disciplinary solutions – this was the main premise of the sixth webinar of the Stockholm Explorative Talks series (15 October), ’Multidisciplinary Teams: Working across academic boundaries foster creative environments.’

As Stockholm Explorative Talks keeps growing and finding more viewers, this exploration was attended by an audience from 32 countries, representing more than 54 universities.

The discussion drew upon the academic experiences of the Explorers – Anna Wedell, Abdeslam Badre, Patricia Esquete Garrote, Christer Fuglesang, and Poorani Gnanasambandan – and all of them talked about how their respective disciplines (medical genetics, social sciences, oceanography, astroparticle physics and nanomaterials) required collaborative work between various fields of expertise to achieve end objectives.

The exploration touched upon various key points such as – the importance of teamwork and ’generosity’ in decision-making processes, the cruciality of pooling a range of competences for deep sea or space missions, the concept of ’leadership’, and distinctions between ’interdisciplinarity’ and ’multidisciplinarity.’

The exploration also underscored the importance of communication, inspiration, and creativity, and proposed how an effective communication of topical issues such as climate change should not only be interdisciplinary but also attempt to ’everyday-ize’ science to reach out to a larger number of people.

Taking right off from this webinar, the next webinar of the Stockholm Explorative Talks series will explore – ’Law as a driving force for the climate’ on 25 November (Thursday).

Anna WedellAnna Wedell, MD, PhD, is Professor at Karolinska Institutet and Head of the Centre for Inherited Metabolic Diseases, Karolinska University Hospital. She was recently appointed Director of the newly established Precision Medicine Center Karolinska. Her research aims to identify genes causing inborn errors of endocrinology and metabolism, to improve diagnostics and management for affected families.

Abdeslam Badre is a policy development expert, and Associate Professor at Mohammed V University in Rabat. His research seeks to analyze current norms that hamper the progress and livelihood of migrants, women, and youth as social groups.

Patricia Esquete Garrote is an assistant researcher at the University of Aveiro, Portugal, where she studies the biodiversity of various marine and freshwater ecosystems, including tropical rainforests and the deep-sea. Currently, she focuses her research in the study of ecological aspects of deep-sea mining.

Christer Fuglesang is Professor in Space Travel at KTH Royal Institute of Technology, and Director of KTH Space Center. The first Swedish astronaut in space, Fuglesang has made two spaceflights – in 2006 and in 2009 – to the International Space Station. His research focuses on particles in space and planetary sunshade formed by millions of solar sails.

Poorani Gnanasambandan is a PhD student at the University of Luxembourg and works at the Materials Research and Technology Department in Luxembourg Institute of Science and Technology. Her research focuses on investigating high performance transparent conducting materials and designing them to be compatible with solar cells.
