The 2021 international student reception at the City Hall

Newly arrived international students at the universities of Stockholm were invited to a reception at the Stockholm City Hall on 10 October.

Hosted by the City of Stockholm, the reception is an eagerly awaited fixture on the City’s annual calendar. This year, the event saw about 250 international students being welcomed to Stockholm – the city that they’re going to call home for the near future.

Cecila Brinck, the President of the City Council, could hardly contain her excitement at being able to organize the event and welcome the students in-person – the reception was the first big event at the City Hall since the start of the pandemic in 2020. She made a brief address and thanked the students for choosing to study at Stockholm’s institutes of higher education, which have historically been among the best in the world.

This was followed by Martin Sahlin, Project Manager at Stockholms Akademiska Forum. He spoke about the important role international students play in the Swedish ecosystem of research and ideas, emphasizing how it is the students who make Stockholm ’a state of minds.’

A duet of music students (Filippa Thörewik and Albin Fellebro) from Stockholm University College of Music Education (SMI) livened up the proceedings with their performance, while the guests were given a tour of the magnificent Blue and Golden Halls.

The party then moved across the neighborhood to the Nobel Museum, where the students were treated to pizza and drinks, while listening to a short talk about 2021’s Nobel Prize winners.

Cheers to a great beginning!

The reception was a tribute to international students, and an acknowledgment of the salient contributions that they make to the knowledge economy of Sweden.
