Andrea Voyer is a Associate Professor and Associate Senior Lecturer in the Department of Sociology at Stockholm University. She was trained at the University of Chicago (A.B. and A.M.) and the University of Wisconsin (M.S. and Ph.D.). Before coming to Stockholm University, she held postdoctoral positions at Yale University and Linnaeus University in Sweden, and then as an Assistant Professor and then Research Professor in Sociology at the University of Connecticut. At Stockholm University, she is the co-founder of the Stockholm University Cultural Sociology seminar and SUCS, the Stockholm University Computational Sociology working group.
Andrea’s work focuses on inequality associated with ethnicity, class, gender, and migration in Sweden and the United States. She draws on two main theoretical foundations: Civil Sphere Theory, which emphasizes the symbolic social construction of the collective solidarity on the idea of shared values and morality; and Elias’ and Goffman’s microsociolgoical theorizing on the symbolic meanings of practical everyday behaviors. Her research has been funded by the Russell Sage Foundation, the US National Science Foundation, and the Swedish Research Council.
