Sarahi Garcia

Microbial Ecology

Assistant Professor

Stockholm University

Sarahi Garcia is an Assistant Professor at the Department of Ecology, Environment and Plant Sciences, Stockholm University and a research group leader of Microbial Interactions (Miint Lab). As a microbial ecologist she has specific interests in understanding microbial interactions and elemental cycles in aquatic ecosystems.

There are more bacteria on Earth than there are stars in the known Universe, and microorganisms in the aquatic environments take almost as much carbon from the atmosphere as the plants in terrestrial environments. There is untapped biodiversity and knowledge in aquatic microorganisms.

Sarahi is also committed to equity and inclusion and loves gymnastics and aerial acrobatics. Born in Mexico, she did a degree in Biochemical Engineering there and then an M.S. in Bioengineering. She then moved to Germany to do a Ph.D. in Microbiology. Sarahi’s research goal and vision is to use bacteria as a toolkit for a sustainable economy and society.
