Magnus Karlsson is Professor of Civil Society Research and Director of the Centre for Civil Society Research at Marie Cederschiöld University. He studies civic engagement, social trust and welfare. His current focus is on civil society in relation to crisis and preparedness.

Magnus Karlsson completed his social work education at Marie Cederschiöld University in 1995, defended his doctoral thesis at Stockholm University in 2002, became associate professor of social work at Ersta Sköndal Bräcke University College (today Marie Cederschiöld University) in 2010 and professor at the university in 2018. In 2018 and 2019, Karlsson held the general professorship in social work at Linnaeus University, and from 2020 he holds the professorship with a focus on civil society at Marie Cederschiöld University. Karlsson has been active as a postdoc at George Mason University, VA, USA, directed a social work programme in Erbil, Iraq, and spent an academic year as a visiting professor at Loyola College of Social Sciences, one of the most prominent social science colleges in India.
